Opinion

The value of these figures for the yes campaign depended on public perceptions of them. Table 4 shows the results of a Harris poll undertaken in early April 1975 (results given in full in Butler & Kitzinger, p. 256), together with an attempt at giving a more subjective view of the politicians in question. The last four columns, then, are my own, though not my own opinions (they are certainly not assertions ). They are intended to be subjective distillations of the general commentary about them at the time, in the press, by comedians and satirists, other politicians and so on; I haven’t generated entries here for those below Shirley Williams, as they were too little known to generate a public image as such. In the Interesting? slot, 5 = very interesting, 1 = very boring. In the Mad? slot, 1 = weirdly normal, 2 = average, 3 = odd, 4 = barking and 5 = completely Radio Rental.

Notice that the approval ratings are all positive, that at least some of the politicians are interesting, and that the average score in the Mad? column is only just above 2. How did that compare with the no camp?
